Event + Interview: Orange You Glad Music Festival

Orange You Glad Music Festival returns for a four day music fest in the beautiful city of Orlando from March 8-11, 2012. Spreading out over multiple venues throughout the city, such as the Milk District and Mills 50, the festival will feature more than 60 national and local act. This year, attendees will see bands such as Tennis, Mrs. Magician, Caveman, Out go the Lights, and headliners, Cults, who will be playing their critically-acclaimed debut self-titled album. We’ll also get a chance to see the premiere of Everything is Terrible! and their debut comedy film. I recently got a chance to speak with the event-thrower, Tierney Tough, to ask some questions about the Fest. Read the full interview below!

Aside from yourself, who’s helping to put this event together?

Last year, I asked my friend Chris Anderson of Parafora Presents to help me organize. He’s been a huge help in pushing this festival to the next level. After putting together the first one on my own, I found out the hard way that you really must delegate jobs; especially since we were expanding this year. So, in order to not go insane, I asked some other good friends of mine to take heed on certain aspects of the festival.

Ashley Belanger, who helps organize the always popular Grandma Party, is our press girl and general idea-bouncer-offer. Gabriela Lothrop, who selflessly puts together the Audubon Park Market every Monday is my vendor coordinator. Her husband, Mike Lothrop, and also Park Ave CDs employee Alex Cooper are my volunteer coordinators. I have an amazing artist, Julie McLaughlin, who is probably the easiest person to work with. On top of that, we have great sponsors, venues, bands, a street team, and even some district directors involved. It’s definitely a huge step forward.

You put together an OYG Fest two years ago. There wasn’t one lastyear, why is that? What are the types of difficulties you face whileputting something this grand together?

In 2010 we put together a ‘Sleigh Ride,’ which was basically a mini fest. It was a one-day pub crawl with a bunch of bands at different venues in the ViMi District, and all proceeds went to Toys for Tots. It was totally fun.

There were a couple of reasons why I didn’t do it as a full-scale festival last year. The first year took a lot out of me, and my band was also gearing up for a national release with a bunch of tours, so I unfortunately just didn’t have the time or energy to do a festival at that same size.

As far as difficulties go, there can be many. You’re working with so many people that, at times, it can be tricky keeping them all on the same page. Luckily, we haven’t had any major problems, and it’s been great to work with all of these excited people.

What do you wish to accomplish with the OYG fest this year?

I can only hope that things go the way they’re supposed to and that it’s a great time for everyone involved so we can do it again next year.

Tell me a little more about the headliners (Cults, Everything is Terrible).

Cults and Tennis are both playing their only Florida shows at Orange You Glad. Should be good times.

Everything is Terrible has a new movie called “Doggie Woggiez! Poochie Woochiez: All Dogs Go On Tour” that is compiled of found VHS footage into one awesome movie that they apparently based off of The Holy Mountain. They are one of the most fun shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of booking, and I can’t wait to see them again.

Event: 2012 Springtime Swap & Shop!
Dana Roquemore of Other People’s Property is at it again with her brilliant Swap and Shop. To put it simply, the S&S is a time to bring your hip clothes you no longer wear and swap with others who are doing the exact same thing. The result? Tons of people (men and women) showing up at one venue to trade and sift though a hipsters paradise.
