More American Photographs looks to Great Depression photography to illuminate impact of Great Recession on America
The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver has announced their new exhibit, More American Photographs, which is set to open March 1st with more than 100 works. Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Jen Hoffman, will be the curator of the exhibition, which was first exhibited in the fall and early winter of 2011.

Inspired by the Farm Security Administration’s (FSA) 1930’s and 1940’s program to document the Great Depression’s effects on America’s landscape and people, More American Photographs offers a portrait of America today in the wake of the Great Recession. Incorporating FSA works owned by the Library of Congress, this exhibition vividly and poignantly discloses the diverse effects of the recent economic calamity: environmental disasters, factory-ghost towns, the collapse of the housing boom and a lack of economic mobility. The exhibition’s 12 contemporary artists include Walead Beshty, Larry Clark, Roe Ethridge, Katy Grannan, William E. Jones, Sharon Lockhart, Catherine Opie, Martha Rosler, Collier Schorr, Stephen Shore, Alec Soth and Hank Willis Thomas. Many of these artists, some of whom do not typically work in a documentary style, have emulated the same straightforward and unglamorous style of photorealism the FSA photographers pioneered in the 1930s. Such historical examples from Esther Bubley, Sheldon Dick, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Gordon Parks, Marion Post Wolcott, Louise Rosskam and Ben Shahn will also be on view. The exhibition’s title refers to Walker Evans’ American Photographs, one of the most powerful photography books ever produced, originally conceived as a catalogue to accompany Evans’ solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1938.

To the Floor Next: Studio K!
Central Florida is home to many superb establishments. There are hidden gems, can’t miss-it in your face places, and the ones that are just right. One company fitting the latter description is Studio K, a business providing an array of appeal to a broad audience. Studio K provides dance, photography and even has an in house agency that specializes in Public Relations, Image Consulting, and even Representation Management. With all of these fabulous opportunities to expand dreams and try new adventures under one roof, what more could anyone desire?
This wonderful establishment came to life when owner and CEO Kristin Weissman made the choice to put her 15 years of experience within the industries of PR, Marketing, and Business Management towards a new venture. Kristin took her own personal love for dance and decided to incorporate this aspect as well. Her hope was a business where adults could come to connect and network with one another and have a blast doing so. It’s important to Kristin that those who attend Studio K feel special reaching a new level of comfort with others but most importantly with themselves. As Kristin says

“the tag line of the studio is “The Floor is Yours,” because whether we are welcoming dance/fitness members, are holding a photo shoot, or servicing a corporate client in PR, the floor is truly theirs to brand themselves however they dream to be.”

And to be honest who wouldn’t feel the confidence surging through their bodies when the members of Studio K are learning new moves and styles from some pretty impressive individuals. The staff hails from various backgrounds and includes a former Broadway performer, a finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” a world champion break dancer, a former Vegas Pussycat Doll, and even a photographer who has worked with Annie Liebovitz…Where do I sign up again?
And as if a dream coming to life wasn’t enough of a thrill, just last month Studio K reached their one year anniversary of opening. Kristin fondly acknowledges the feat the studio has met; she and her team have managed to lift this unique business venture off the guard and have kept it thriving.
Plenty more exciting possibilities are in the process of becoming a reality and Kristin, along with her fantastic staff, are doing all the right things to keep climbing to the next level. For the future Kristin aims to grow the dance division of Studio K. Reflective on what’s already been met and planning the next phase Kristin has this to say:

“This past year, Studio K welcomed five major Hollywood projects that came to Orlando from LA, and it is my goal to achieve more of that to help the entertainment and the arts landscape here within the community. I think there is so much opportunity and talent within our city that is not being utilized. I hope Studio K will become a strong part of that new foundation.”

Whether you’re looking for some consultation on representation, some PR strategy or you’d really love to showcase and enhance the moves you’ve kept to the privacy of your living room after 3 margaritas (it happens) give Studio K a whirl. The floor may just be yours next.
